Wild Dogs in Essex
Travels on foot from Epping to Iken
After years of passing through Essex to get between my childhood home in Suffolk and my London flat, I determined one weekend to walk the space in between - to journey door-to-door from the urban magnet of my present to the countryside of my childhood.
With four days untied, I caught the central line to its eastern limit in Epping and set-off along the Essex Way, an ancient footpath bisecting the heart of the county. 105 miles later I found myself home again but with a wealth of anecdotes and encounters that only the lonely hiker can accrue.
This chronicle is an expansion of notes made along the roadside.
